The Whole Back is a sequence of connected, gentle movements to unwind the network of patterns that often underlie acute and chronic back pain and tension. This sequence was developed by Dr. Eleanor Criswell of the Novato Institute of Hanna Somatics. During her life, she taught this sequence to thousands of back pain sufferers who learned how to find relief through the unwinding, slow-moving process. Katie has been teaching this to groups and private clients since 2009.
What is Hanna Somatics?
Hanna Somatics is a gentle, neuromuscular movement practice developed by Thomas Hanna that focuses on relieving chronic muscle tension and improving movement through sensory awareness and motor control. Using slow, mindful movements helps re-educate the nervous system to release habitual patterns of contraction, promoting greater ease, flexibility, and functional alignment in the body.
Who is this workshop for?
The whole back refers to whole body patterns that present as either chronic or acute neck, upper back, lower back, or sometimes hip pain. This sequence is designed to be something that one could do once a month, or even once a year. It doesn’t matter if the origin of the pain is from an accident, surgeries, body posture, or even repeated use patterns. (Please note: this is very gentle, and a very different kind of somatic experience than postural yoga.) Though this can be accommodated for someone unable to get up and down from the floor, in this session, we will be lying down on the floor. Please inquire if you have any questions.
