Yoga 101 Review

The October Yoga 101 workshop was amazing. Thank you to everyone involved. Before it gets too far in my rearview mirror, I wanted to share a few things. The next one will be in April; dates are TBD.

In early October, we had our first Katonah Yoga 101 weekend immersion! But don’t let the name fool you. In many ways, the immersion format allows for a depth of the material that might normally take many months to explore. Like any immersive experience, it is learning amplified, making outcomes exponential.

There are two big differences with this format. One has to do with the different mindset of committing to a whole weekend. To think, I’m just doing this, and only this, this weekend. That choice shifts something. It’s different than when we try to fit practice into our busy daily schedules; it allows time to reflect, to let things soak in, and to absorb the learning perhaps in a different way.

For me, it’s different too. Having the extra time together, without the pressure of finishing things, creates space for real dialogue and unfolding. I get more of what my dissertation chair calls the between-the-doors moments. Those moments where we witness each other and share small things, and we can listen in less formal ways. And knowing I’ll see you again the next day builds a sense of continuity— a living thread that carries from one session to the next.

In educational theory, this kind of shared, experiential process is often described as a community of practice: a group bound by shared curiosity, reflection, and embodied participation. The truth is, we experience that in all of our regular classes. Workshops just give us a little more of it. Over time, that continuity creates not just learning, but an inner sense of belonging— a place where the community itself becomes the teacher.

See what we went over in the course syllabus below. And there is a summary video on the Instagram page too!
